BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings head into Sunday's second playoff game hoping for more room to skate. Neither had much space in the tight-checking opener that Detroit won 1-0 Friday night on Pavel Datsyuk's goal with 3:01 remaining. Top-seeded Boston is hoping to get a split of the first two games before the best-of-seven series shifts to Detroit for two games. If a fifth game is necessary it would be in Boston.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Matt Calvert banged home a rebound 1:10 into the second overtime and the Columbus Blue Jackets earned the first playoff victory in franchise history with a 4-3 win at the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night. Game 3 is Monday in Columbus.
DETROIT (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out nine in seven innings and the Detroit Tigers finally managed to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Saturday. Detroit had lost 10 straight to the Angels and hadn't beaten them in nearly two years. The Tigers used home runs from Nick Castellanos and Victor Martinez to snap that streak.
ATLANTA (AP) - So much for home-court advantage in the NBA playoffs. Indiana, Toronto and the Los Angeles Clippers all gave it away Saturday, a day when road teams enjoyed a slew of opening-day success. The Pacers lost to Atlanta 101-93, Toronto fell to Brooklyn 94-87 and the Clippers were topped by Golden State 109-105. The Pacers became the third top seed in the last decade to lose Game 1 of the playoffs.
