Students participate in 'Bring a Veteran to School Day'

ADRIAN, Mich. (WTVG) - Students at Prairie Elementary School in Adrian spent the day Friday honoring veterans as part of Bring a Veteran to School Day.

In honor of Veterans Day, students were encouraged to bring a family member or friend to school who served in the armed forces.

A total of 29 veterans visited the school and talked to students.

"I like the expressions on their face and the feedback that they give me," said Elden Kattell, a Army veteran. "They are great kids."

"I like to try and explain what a veteran is and the meaning behind it," said Marine Veteran, Tim Lothamer.

Student recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang songs of gratitude to veterans.

Kindergarten teacher Sarah Holtz helped start the event ten years ago.

"The stories that these guys tell, it helps them understand. They are talking about hot it's everyday life of a veteran. They are our heroes," said Sarah Holtz.

"It's a great experience for our building and staff to come together and honor the veterans," said Prairie Elementary Principal, Shanan Henline.

The event includes a special ceremony to honor veterans at Adrian High School.

The school wants to continue the tradition next year.
