Covey joins race for Toledo mayor

Opal Covey pulls petitions for mayoral run.

(TOLEDO) - Toledo's race for mayor expanded on the final day to file petitions. Opal Covey, who told the Blade two years ago that "I have to run until I become mayor" will give it at least one more try.

This will be Ms. Covey's sixth attempt. She will face incumbent Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson, Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszupiewica. and City Council member Tom Waniewski,

Petitions for the candidates have been filed but not yet certified. Toledo's primary will be held on September 12. The two candidates for mayor with the most votes will move on to November's general election.

Thirteen candidates filed for twelve available city council at-large seats. Voters may cast ballots for six candidates in the September primary. Candidates include Gary Johnson, Kurt Young, Cecelia Adams, Alfonso Narvaez, Patricia Robinson, Harvey Savage, Jr., Sam Melden, Nick Komives, Clyde Phillips, Jr., Tom Names, Larry J. Sykes, Rob Ludeman and Sandy Spang.
