(TOLEDO) - It was almost unreal. 135 ice fishermen were stranded when a large slab of ice broke off in Lake Erie. More than 93 were rescued after boats, helicopters and first responders from throughout Northwest Ohio scrambled to save lives.
The 2009 incident took place on ice reported that the ice was two feet think but cracked when winds picked up and temperatures rose.
Ohio's Department of Natural Resources reminds ice anglers to prepare and share a "float plan" to let others know when and where they will be on the ice and their expected return time. ODNR recommends fishing with a partner and discussing a local ice guide to discuss ice thickness and conditions in advance.
