NORTHWEST OHIO (WTVG) - Since 1984, $9.8 million have been donated to 170 local children's charities because of the Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning & O-I.

Good Grief of NWO and Cancer Connection of NWO are among the more than 20 recipients this year.

Good Grief of NWO is a peer support group for children and teens who have lost someone significant in their lives.

Cancer Connection of NWO provides support for people of all ages who suffer from every type of cancer.

"We've heard the sad news of John McCain being diagnosed recently," said Jean Schoen the Founder and President of Cancer Connection of NWO. "Can you imagine being an 8-year-old little boy who has been diagnosed with the same kind of cancer."

All charities receive a charitable donation by the end of the year.

Dorothy Mockenstrum the Managing Director of Good Grief of NWO said, "the dollar donation of course if very important to us, but above and beyond that, the exposure and recognition is beyond. . . anything we could reach right now."

Last year, the Marathon Classic raised $543,000 for 19 local children's charities.
