TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Love them or hate them, there are probably some extra candy canes around the house this time of year. Now, it's time to celebrate the striped treat.
December 26 is national candy cane day. Originally, the peppermint-flavored candy came in the form of a stick, not a cane with the curved top. It was also white with those colored stripes.
In 1900, candy-makers introduced the white cane shape with the red stripes. But the history goes back to the middle of the 1800s. Those candy canes were used to decorate Christmas trees more than 150 years ago.
Of course, there's a record for the world's longest candy cane. According to Guinness, that long cane stretched 51 feet.
