Murder suspect takes plea deal in deadly shooting case

Telly Hopings, 22 at the time of the shooting, is charged with murder. Police say he shot Eugene Blackman, 26, back in May of 2016 in the 700 block of W. Sylvania Ave.

Hopings entered and Alford plea to that murder charge Tuesday morning. A judge sentenced him to 18 years to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole after 18 years.

An Alford Plea is not an admission of guilt, but rather an admission that the prosecution has enough evidence to prove the suspect is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The deadly shooting happened just outside Lyric's Lounge nearly two years ago. Officers found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center where he later died.

Police say Hopings fled the scene and was later arrested at Woodward and Doyle.
