TOLEDO (13abc Action News) -
Ohio Democratic senator Sherrod Brown says proposed cuts to the Great Lake Restoration Initiative (GLRI) are a "betrayal" of the region and the voters who supported president Trump's campaign.
Speaking before a roundtable discussion on the importance of Lake Erie to jobs and the economy in Northwest Ohio, Brown said, "It's makes no economic sense. It's just stupid. It's just a betrayal of what we stand for and what people voted for."
The president has proposed eliminating funding the GLRI.
Brown and Republican senator Rob Portman were instrumental in saving $300 million for the rest of the fiscal year for the GLRI but they are trying to convince the Trump Administration to maintain full funding.
Without that money, Brown says various industries reliant on the lake, tourism, fishing, recreation would be greatly affected.
Drinking water quality would also be jeopardized, Brown said.
The senator says Lake Erie-bordering communities generate $14.1 billion in economic impact each year and support more than 123,000 job
