The process of issuing amber alerts in Ohio

TOLEDO (WTVG) - The purpose of sending amber alerts is to reunite families with abducted children.

13abc wanted to know the process for getting an alert sent out to thousands of people?

Lt.Joe Heffernan said, in child-abduction cases in Ohio there's criteria authorities have to follow.

1. The child has to be 17 years old or younger
2. In serious danger or death
3. The activation must be recommended by authorities
4. This excludes runaways

After those rules are met, then the Toledo Police Department would contact the Lucas County Sheriff's Office.

"We will expedite this and get it out as soon as possible," said Lt. Heffernan.

TPD also has a way of using a private company to send out robo calls for situations that don't meet the standards of an amber alert. For instance, if an elderly person with health concerns went missing 1,000 calls could go out every minute.
