It's the most common complication of the cold and flu season: Ear Infections.
There is no way to tell if an ear infection is caused by bacteria or by a virus. So it's important to get it checked by a doctor. Ear infections are most often found in small children before the age of 24 months but they are becoming more and more common in adults.
In up to 80% of the cases the infections are caused by a virus and will go away on their own within 5 days. But 20% are bacterial and need to be treated with antibiotics.
The pain and discomfort can be treated with Tylenol or Motrin.
