Playing in their second Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference jamboree in as many days, Lourdes posted an eighth place finish on Saturday at Arbor Hills Golf Club in Jackson, Mich.
The Gray Wolves posted a team total of 312 on the afternoon, and were just four strokes out of fifth place. Northwestern Ohio took home the team’s top honors for the day, carding a four-under par round of 284, one shot better than Lawrence Tech.
“We played with a lack of grit and tenacity that we need to be competitive,” head coach Gil Guerrero said after the round. “We made too many silly mistakes that we have control over.”
Spencer Stubbs (Lima, Ohio/Bath H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves, carding an even-par round of 72 to finish in a tie for 10th place overall. Phil Stuart (Jackson, Mich./Luman Christi Catholic H.S.), playing in his hometown, posted his collegiate-best round of 77 to finish second for Lourdes.
John Bandi (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) added a round of 80, while Logan Myers (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) rounded out the scoring, shooting 83 on the 6,516-yard course. Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
“You have to be proud of Jay’s integrity,” Guerrero added. “He saw his score posted on the board, and knew that it was lower than he had. He said something immediately, even knowing his fate.”
Reece Blair of Northwestern Ohio was the day’s medalist, firing a four-under par round of 68, one stroke ahead of three other players.
Lourdes will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves take part in the Jon P. Spiess Memorial. Action begins at 10:30 a.m. at Ironwood Golf Club in Wauseon, Ohio.
