Lourdes began its 2017-2018 wrestling season on Saturday, earning a tie for sixth place at the Adrian Invitational held inside the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center in Adrian, Mich.
The Gray Wolves finished with 70 points on the day, tying host Adrian in the team standings. The Gray Wolves were just 12.5 points behind fifth place Washington & Jefferson in the nine-school field. Wabash won the team title with 200 points, outdistancing runner-up Heidelberg, which finished with 115.5 points.
“This was a solid start to our 2017-18 season,” head coach Dock Kelly III said afterwards. “The competition was tough, and overall as a team the guys wrestled well. It’s always exciting whenever wrestlers are able to get quality wins and place at early season tournaments.”
Troy Wilson (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves in the 149-pound weight class, earning a runner-up finish. He registered three falls on the day, downing an opponent from Henry Ford in the opening round before pinning two wrestlers from John Carroll. He fell to Jared Timberman of Wabash in the championship.
Tyler Roberts (Hudson, Mich./Hudson H.S.) earned a fifth place finish at 133 pounds, recording four victories on the day. He opened with a fall against Thiel before suffering a defeat in the quarterfinals. The redshirt-sophomore battled out of the consolation bracket to earn a tech fall victory as well as a decision, and won by major decision 22-9 in the fifth place match.
At 165 pounds, Stefan Johnson (Fremont, Ohio/Ross H.S.) also registered a fifth place finish with four wins. After losing his first match, he won three straight in the consolation bracket, one by fall, one by major decision, and the third by decision. He also won by injury default in the fifth place match.
Mike Andrzejewski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson H.S.) also picked up a pair of wins at 165 pounds before finishing in eighth place. He won his first match via fall just 1:54 into the contest and picked up a decision in the consolation bracket.
In the 285-pound weight class, Ben Ferguson (Casstown, Ohio/Miami East H.S.) finished fifth, winning three contests. He won his first two matches by decision before dropping a semifinal match via fall and a consolation contest. He bounced back in the fifth place match to score a fall in just 1:11. Grayden Hamilton (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth H.S.) picked up his first collegiate win in the same weight class, recording a fall in the consolation bracket before finishing in eighth place.
Reilly Heater (Ney, Ohio/Fairview H.S.) won twice at 141 points, finishing in sixth place. He won both of his first two collegiate matches by major decision. Marcus Deren (Middletown, Conn./Vinal Technical H.S.) earned his first win as a Gray Wolf at 197 pounds, winning his first match with a pin.
Lourdes returns to the mats on Thursday evening for its home opener, as the Gray Wolves welcome Otterbein to the Franciscan Center Gymnasium. The opening bout is set for 7 p.m.
