OTTAWA LAKE, Mich. (WTVG) - The Northern Lakes League brought its cross country championship here to Michigan Saturday after Metroparks Toledo told the eight-school Ohio-based league it could no longer hold its event at Secor Metropark.
A new state, a new venue and a new course did not change much from last season's results.
The Northview girls team and the Perrysburg boys team defended their respective titles from 2016. Northview's Jenna Kill repeated as the individual champion with a time of 19 minutes 15 seconds.
Bowling Green senior Zach Applegate is now a first time winner at the NLL Championship after he finished second his junior season. Applegate ran not only a personal record on this new course, but he broke his own school record by two seconds after he crossed the line in 15:30.
The Perrysburg boys team had five harriers in the top nine to finish with 25 points. Only 19 seconds separated the Yellow Jackets first finisher (senior Adam Ohls) and the team's fifth finisher (senior Adam Billmaier). Perrysburg's top three finishers all crossed the chip mat with the same time of 16:32.
Napoleon senior Sydney Niekamp ran a strong race as she challenged Kill throughout the 3.1 mile course at Whiteford Valley Golf Club. Niekamp took second in 19:21.
