TOLEDO (13abc Action News) - They look like actual credit card readers, but they're phony.
Criminals install them to try to steal your account information.
The latest spot? Gas pumps.
The 13abc I-Team first warned you about a surge in skimmers last month.
The devices are now showing up at gas pumps in 7 Ohio counties, mostly in the central part of the state. The Dayton Daily News reports they have been discovered in Portage, Montgomery, Butler, Fayette, Hamilton, Union and Washington counties.
State troopers say those skimmers are likely tied to a Cuban crime ring.
In response to the uptick in skimmers, the Lucas County Auditor released this statement: "While conducting regular inspections, no skimming devices have been discovered at any locations checked by Lucas County Weights & Measurements officials."
The auditor's office goes on to state that employees will be stepping up the checks to look for skimmers in Lucas County, and there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
For example, if the card reader feels loose on the machine, tell employees at that gas station.
Also, cover the keypad with your hand, just in case there is a camera recording your pin number.
Plus, if you use a credit card instead of a debit card, you won't have to enter a pin. A credit card may also add a layer of protection because it would ensure a criminal would not gain access to your bank account.
One person suggested you avoid paying at the pump altogether, so you can go around the skimmer and bypass the scam.
If you spot any potential skimmers or if you have questions or concerns, you can contact the Lucas County Auditor’s Weights and Measures Hotline at (419) 213-4406.
