Home-grown business to hit shelves in Kroger, Target

ANN ARBOR, MI (13abc Action News) They sell baking mixes and their company is about to boom.

You will soon see their products in two major grocery chains, and at the head of it all are two friends from the Toledo area.

Lizann Anderson and Suzie Miller are co-founders of Among Friends.

It started in a small room nearly 8 years ago.

The two came up with Suzie Q's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix and started putting it into bags for friends.

Then, they started selling it in Monette's Market and Whole Foods.

"I remember Nathan, who was the buyer at the time, he picked up the bag and went, 'There is nothing out there like this,'" Anderson said. "I knew we were onto something."

What's in the mix is as important as what's not.

The bags show these cookie and baking mixes are whole grain, gluten free, no gums or fillers.

In just the past 15 months, Among Friends has gone from 300 stores to 3,000.

The company is now in a 10,000 square foot facility in Ann Arbor, with room to grow.

That's good planning, because Among Friends will start appearing on the shelves of Kroger and Target as early as this June.
