Man biking across country raising awareness of rare childhood disease

TOLEDO, Ohio (13abc Action News) - He's biking cross county for a cure, and Wednesday he made a stop in Toledo.

Late last month, Greg Crawford left Long Island on a 3,500 mile trip to raise awareness and money to find a cure for Niemann-Pick type c disease.

It's a rare disorder where kids can't process cholesterol properly and often die in their teens.

This is the fifth year Crawford has taken the cross-country trip.

"We raised $1 million in those first four years,” says Crawford. “Trying to raise a million in this ride alone, already over 800-thousand, and we'll probably drive a lot of that toward research and clinical trials of a drug that we discovered."

The goal is to reach Pebble Beach, California on June 26 in time for a golf fundraiser.

Crawford says, unless there's lightning, he'll ride every day until he gets there.
