KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer as the Cleveland Indians topped the Kansas City Royals 6-1 last night. Santana connected in the ninth inning for his 22nd home run, helping Cleveland win for the fifth time in six games. He homered five times at Kauffman Stadium in a series last month. Danny Salazar pitched four-hit ball for five shutout innings. He didn't come back out after a 44-minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Harrison hit an RBI triple and scored on Jose Tabata's tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates eked out a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Pirates starter Edinson Volquez was working on a no-hitter before a leadoff single in the seventh. Reds right-hander Mike Leake allowed six hits in seven innings in his second consecutive scoreless outing.

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Bengals released running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis today, a move that was anticipated after they drafted LSU's Jeremy Hill in the second round. Green-Ellis was Cincinnati's leading rusher each of the last two seasons. His role was reduced last year when Giovani Bernard was added to the backfield. Green-Ellis ran for 756 yards and a career-low 3.4 yards per carry. He was entering the final year on his contract.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Indians activated catcher Yan Gomes from the seven-day concussion list and put him in the lineup Friday for the opener of a three-game series with the Royals. Gomes suffered concussion symptoms after taking a baseball off his mask on August 21st at Minnesota. Gomes is hitting .284 with 21 doubles, 17 home runs and 53 RBIs in 109 games. His .477 slugging percentage ranks 12th in the AL.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Indians have reunited with slugger Russell Branyan, signing him to a minor league deal for the remainder of the season. The 38-year-old Branyan has spent part of six seasons with Cleveland. He's played for Tijuana in the Mexican League this season, hitting 19 homers with 59 RBIs.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Number 5 Ohio State opens its season in Baltimore this afternoon when they take on the Navy Midshipmen. The Buckeyes have won 24 straight regular-season games. Ohio State has national championship aspirations despite losing starting quarterback and Heisman hopeful Braxton Miller to a season-ending shoulder injury.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Johnny Manziel's ready to hand off his nickname. Or at least share it. After Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Kenny Hill shredded Number 9 South Carolina for 511 yards passing on Thursday, breaking Manziel's single-game school record, the Browns rookie QB acknowledged that his replacement had more than earned some respect and attention. Manziel posted "KENNY FOOTBALL" on his Twitter account.
