Sashem often jokes that most of the time, she's "napping with her eyes open." That's what happens when your alarm goes off while most of the world is still in deep-snooze!
Brey joined the award-winning 13ABC News Team in September 2004 - and was surprised to find there was a cheerful morning person hibernating deep within. She cherishes being a part of the morning routine for so many loyal viewers and looks forward to connecting with you every weekday morning between 4:30 and 7 a.m. for the Emmy-Nominated "Action News Good Morning" and again for "13abc Action News at Noon".
And like any good house guest, this team doesn't come to your home empty-handed: they work all night and morning to round up the latest news, weather and traffic information you need to get going. The crew takes its responsibility seriously - but always manages to fit in a good dose of laughter.
Sashem has experienced some of Northwest Ohio's biggest news stories up close and personal: She provided live reports to CNN as the only TV reporter on the scene when the 2005 Neo-Nazi Riots exploded on the streets of Toledo. She donned a life jacket to cover the devastating summer flooding in Northwest Ohio. Brey also nabbed an exclusive interview with American Idol runner-up (and Northwest Ohio native) Crystal Bowersox prior to the singer's first concert in Toledo.
Sashem will tell you some of her happiest moments are out in the community, meeting the faces on the other side of the camera lens. In 2011, Brey was honored with the "Toledo 20 Under 40" Award recognizing her contributions to the community. Sashem proudly volunteers her time, supporting annual events for well-known organizations like the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, The Ronald McDonald House of NW Ohio and the Toledo Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center. In her time here, Sashem has also developed a relationship with members of the Junior League of Toledo, emceeing the annual 'Chocolate Soiree' to raise funds for local community projects; promoting diversity in the workplace with the Toledo Area Human Resources Association (TAHRA); and helping to nurture growing organizations like Nature's Nursery and The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio.
Sashem is a born and bred Ohioan. Before arriving in Toledo, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Ohio State University (go Bucks!), all while tackling behind-the-scenes work at WSYX-ABC 6/FOX 28 News and WSNY-FM. After graduation, her love for music, movies and television carried her into the glittering world of Entertainment Journalism, with a stint at 'E! News Daily' in Los Angeles. That led to a position as Anchor/Reporter at KLBK and KAMC in Lubbock, Texas, where Sashem won several Associated Press awards covering stories ranging from the Shuttle Columbia explosion to the outbursts of then-Texas Tech Basketball Coach Bob Knight.
Toledo has become a wonderful home for Sashem and viewers like you make every trip to the grocery store or gas station a chance to meet new friends (and fellow dark-n-early-birds) face-to-face.
