Bax Global is no longer at Toledo Express, but it left behind some of its business. DHL Express moved into the airport Monday.
DHL used to handle some cargo for BaxGlobal, Chief Operating Officer of the Toledo Lucas County Port Authority Matt Sapara says, "Since Bax announced it was leaving Toledo Express, DHL had a choice to make, whether or not to relocate the cargo it was basically handling for users to Detroit or any other location."
Instead, DHL decided to stay, signing a 3-year, month to month lease with the Port Authority, bringing in about $200,000 a year, Sapara says "The Port Authority considers this great news. What it does is it validates what the Port Authority believes. Toledo Express offers terrific cargo handling solutions to a lot of end users out there."
DHL will employ 25 workers, mostly part-time, and will ship 9 planes out of Toledo Express each week, "Basically it will be used for a center of flow for product coming into the area, and then will be put on a plane and shipped to Cincinnati, Minneapolis St Paul.
This deal is new business, but it does not replace Bax Global, which employed around 700 people, and left Toledo Express early this month, "This certainly does not replace Bax. The numbers are not as great as Bax was in terms of cargo, shipment or in terms of employment. But it's a start," says Sapara. A start leaders hope will turn into a long term commitment.
Since this is a month to month lease, either party can back out at any time. Port Authority leaders, however, hope to see DHL expand in Toledo.
