Injured Greyhound gets a new start

Posted: Updated:

A local Greyhound rescue group needs your help. Local group, North Coast Greyhound Connection saved a puppy from West Virginia and that puppy has needed extensive medical treatment.

Bentley lost a leg after vets determined that he wouldn't live without an amputation, but tonight the six month old greyhound is doing remarkably well. In fact he seems to be right on track to live out a happy and healthy life.

Bill Taylor is the president of North Coast Greyhound Connection. He says Bentley was in training to be a racing greyhound, but he was hurt when his leg got caught in a fence, "In the course of his training he was released in a run and that's when he sustained the injury. He was misdiagnosed and not properly treated and we think he probably spent three years of his life in pain."

To add insult to injury, Bentley was attacked by other dogs once his leg was trapped in the fence. Despite his rough start in life, Taylor says Bentley is a winner, "He has a terrific personality and he's very calm. In spite of his handicap he should lead a relatively normal life . He will certainly be happy, loved and learn to play."

So far North Coast Greyhound Connection has spent about four thousand dollars for Bentley's treatment. His leg was amputated at Ohio State and he's getting follow up care here in Toledo from Dr. Roger Grothaus of the Reynolds Road Animal Hospital, " I think he'll do just fine without having his front leg. He will get around just fine growing and adapting to the loss of his limb. I think his quality of life will be excellent."

Like most charities money is tight for North Coast Greyhound Connection. They are looking for help paying Bentley's bills. they are also looking for people to adopt another one of the many Greyhounds they rescue every year

By the way, they named him Bentley after the luxury car maker because they knew he'd be expensive!
