Dozens of volunteers help families in need

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of volunteers across the area spent the day giving back to the community, helping families in need.     13abc's Alexis Means spent the day with some people who work to bring holiday cheer to the less fortunate.

Families from across our area spent the day giving back to people who may be less fortunate in our community.  They're delivering the traditional Thanksgiving meal to needy families at their homes.

The Llewellyn family expects to deliver about ten meals.   It's their faith that motivates them to give back to people in the community.

Kadin Llewellyn says, "Just seeing the people in need who need the stuff more than we do. It not only brings a great feeling to us, but it also helps us further God's kingdom and how He can affect  us in our lives and just share that with other people."

Kara Llewellyn says, "We get so much from the people that we deliver to and yeah it's a nice family activity to do. We're grateful to have the opportunity"

Jon Llewellyn says, "We've been blessed and we want to share that blessing with other people who are not as fortunate as we've been"

Like all Thanksgiving meals it starts in the kitchen. The chef for Main Street Ventures says his day started at 4:30 this morning.     Volunteers set up an assembly line to keep things in order.       The chef says all the food for today's meal was donated.      More than 550 meals were delivered to families in our area.

Chef Simon Pesusich says, "We have mashed potatoes, turkey breast, we have a stuffing or dressing."

This is the second year the Cherry Street Mission and the owner of Real Seafood Company have joined hands to feed the needy.

"One and every 6 Americans is worried about where dinner is coming from," says Dan Rodgers of the Cherry Street Mission.

And Mike Gibbons of the Main Street Ventures says, "It's great to be able to help out. It's a real concern when we found out this year is even tougher than last year. We were hoping it was going to get a little better. The economy turned around and Toledo's been hit very hard. So we are happy to continue this."

Proud to continue serving people in the community and fighting hunger. The Cherry Street Mission fed more than 1,200 people today.
