A Perrysburg man is dead after a fiery accident on the Ohio Turnpike. It happened just west of mile marker 91 at the exit for Fremont and SR-53.

Around 10:30 a.m. the call came in that a semi-truck struck three Ohio Turnpike Commission workers.

Safety officials believe the workers were all outside the two vehicles on scene when the crash occurred.

One walked away from the accident with no injuries whatsoever. Two were severely hurt, along with the driver of the commercial vehicle. They were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.

One of the workers did not survive. John Fletcher, 53, of Perrysburg was killed in the accident. He was an assistant foreman with the Ohio Turnpike Commission.

James Roudebush and Anthony Stout were the two maintenance workers seriously injured. A fourth worker was on scene walked away with no injuries.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was Edward Mills, 53, of Doylestown, Ohio.

Safety officials say the commercial vehicle was owned by Distech Inc. of Newbury Ohio.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The crash shut down the turnpike's westbound lanes about 30 miles southeast of Toledo and caused a traffic backup for several miles.

As traffic backed up, authorities urged travelers to find alternate westbound routes, rerouting traffic around the crash site.

13abc spoke to John Fletcher's wife over the phone.

"John was more than a construction worker," she says. "He was a devoted and loving father to three young children. He loved his children more than anything in this world.  He is going to be sorely missed."

Residents of a small Canadian island are being warned not to drink their well water because of potentially toxic algae in Lake Erie. The blue-green algae blooms causing the warning are the same stuff that contaminated the drinking water of about 400,000 people in the Toledo area earlier this month.
