On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration canceled flights to Tel Aviv, Israel after a rocket landed too close to the airport. This latest news comes off the heels of downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. Now lawmakers are saying passenger safety is the number one priority in the skies. “There are enough things to be fearful of in this world without starting to think if 'I get on this plane is it going to be shot down.' It isn’t so, so unusual,” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said. Brown sa...

We've gotten a break with the weather this winter, and it seems that goes for winter illnesses, too.  Susan Ross Wells checked in with a family doctor this week and that doctor says it has definitely been more quiet than normal this winter, but she is seeing a stomach bug right now called gastroenteritis.

"We're seeing a lot of that," says internist Dr. Ruby Nucklos. "People coming in with stomach pain, low grade fever, sometimes a little diarrhea, vomiting.  Usually it lasts for one or two days."

Dr. Nucklos says sometimes the bug will last longer than that.  She says its generally caused by a virus.

"You're contagious during that time so you want to make sure that you're washing your hands very thoroughly, that if you're doing a lot of coughing that you're coughing into your elbow like this, and drinking plenty of fluids."

She says they have yet to see any influenza in the office, but are seeing other bugs.

"The typical garden variety common colds that usually kinda clear up within seven to ten days," says the doctor.  "We're seeing that sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, some sinus infections and that's viral too, so, most of the things we're seeing are caused by viruses."

Dr. Nucklos says don't bother asking your doctor for an antibiotic to treat your virus.  She says they don't do any good, and in fact, could harm you if you take them when you don't really need them.

One final note about the flu: Dr. Nucklos says its still possible it will show up in our community. Flu season typically lasts into March, and sometimes April.  She says it isn't too late to get a flu shot.
