The City of Toledo wants to add nearly a dozen more red light cameras to area intersections. The money they generate could help fund programs in the city.

It's not a done deal yet, and it won't be until council votes on the mayor's 2012 budget plan, but the hope is it will raise money for recreation programs in Toledo.

They may be an inconvenience to some, but for the city they're a way to bring in some extra cash.

If all goes as planned, the 11 new red light cameras could bring in $320,000. Under the Bell administration's proposal, that money would bring back summer sports leagues and activities.

"It does restore the biggest thing we were looking for, which was giving kids something constructive to do in a positive atmosphere," says Toledo Councilman Steve Steel.

Councilman Steel is the chair of Youth, Parks, Recreation and Community Relations. He says, in years past, the recreation budget was cut to bare bones, leaving only enough money to pay for personnel.

"They maintained the parks and mowed the grass, but there wouldn't be lines or bases for the baseball fields or money for umpires for the games," he says.

But if council passes the proposed budget as written, the programs will have funding.

Steel calls it a good move. "I'm ecstatic that it looks like we can restore something for this year," he says, "but we have to keep looking at the long term solution as well."

At this point, the city hasn't said where the cameras will go, but they will be at intersections deemed dangerous by Toledo police.

The proposal is expected to be finalized when council passes the 2012 budget, which could happen as early as Tuesday.
