An economic development delegation from Findlay is taking its message global. They're heading to Japan to meet with companies that now do business in Hancock County. Japanese companies have been doing business in the Findlay area for more than a quarter century and the hope is the trip will bring more foreign investment to Northwest Ohio.

Tony Iriti is the head of Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development and he says you don't have to look any further than a local industrial park to see the strong and well developed relationship between Findlay and a number of Japanese companies, "Our Tall Timbers industrial park got started after the first Findlay delegation went to Japan in 1986. It's where six Japanese companies have located." Iriti says the delegation will be meeting with the leaders of many of those companies, "Like with any business, you have to get in front of your customers."

But Iriti says the trip is obviously about bringing new business to the city too which can be a lengthy process, "When you go over there its to build relationships and once you build those relationships it may be one to two years before anything comes along."

Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik has only been on the job for a matter of weeks and she's wasting no time getting down to business, even if it means traveling thousands of miles to bring in new business, "I think we have a unique business environment here and people want to be part of it. We want to foster that to create growth for our region and for the state of Ohio. We lost quite a bit like everyone else and we're trying hard and working well with our economic development people to bring jobs and investment here so we can create wealth for everyone."

There will be business and economic development leaders on the trip as well as a member of the regional growth partnership here in Toledo. The delegation leaves this Saturday and returns next Sunday. All of the elected officials will be paying for the trip out of their own pockets. On a side note the Mayor will be using social media sites like face book and twitter to share her experience abroad with Northwest Ohio.
