MORNING NEWS DIGEST – February 3, 2012

"NEW" LOCAL

1. TOLEDO OVERNIGHT HAZMAT INVESTIGATION

Crews rushed to the TRANSFLOW company near the intersection of Miami Street and Oak Dale around 12:30 this morning. Authorities tell us a driver on I-75 spotted what appeared to be a vapor cloud in the area. Crews rushed to block off the streets in the area while hazmat teams worked to identify the substance. Turns out it was harmless. According to officials on the scene a valve on a train tanker was loose leaking *steam* into the air.

2. NO REFUSAL WEEKEND

This morning, several law enforcement agencies will kick off a "no refusal weekend". If you get pulled over for suspected drunk driving and refuse a breathalyzer test ... you will be taken to a hospital for a blood test. That's according to the Wood County Sheriff. This is a joint effort, including Bowling Green Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and BGSU police.

3. OH: CASINO FLOOR DEMOLITION

(AP) - Demolition of a floor that collapsed at a Cincinnati casino site injuring more than a dozen workers is expected to begin Friday. Rock Gaming said in a statement Thursday that the city approved demolition of the section that collapsed Jan. 27 while workers were pouring concrete. One worker injured in the collapse remains in serious condition.

4. OH: STATE OF THE STATE ABSENCES

(AP) - Add two Ohio statewide officials to the list of those unlikely to attend Gov. John Kasich's relocated State of the State speech. Already, Ohio Supreme Court justices have said they can't make the three-hour car trip to Steubenville because court is in session that day in Columbus. Now, their spokespeople tell The Associated Press that Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine can't go and Secretary of State Jon Husted has a schedule conflict.

5. OH: ANTI-BULLYING LEGISLATION

(AP) - Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed an anti-bullying bill that requires schools to update policies to include harassment and intimidation sent electronically, such as over the Internet or mobile phones. Kasich's office said he signed the bill into law on Thursday. Among other provisions, it also says policies must be extended to school buses, which training must be available for staff and that parents are to receive an annual bullying policy statement.

6. OH: KINGS ISLAND HIRING 4,000

(AP) - The Kings Island amusement and water park outside Cincinnati says it plans to hire 4,000 workers to fill seasonal positions. The park on Thursday said it is accepting applications online for the 2012 season that starts April 28. Open positions are in various areas, including admissions, entertainment, food and beverage, lifeguards, rides and security. The park is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Co.

7. IRAN'S SUPREME LEADER: ISRAEL A CANCER

(AP) - Iran's Supreme Leader says his country will join any nation or group that "confronts" Israel. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on state TV this morning that Iran has helped the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas in their fights against Israel, and will help anyone else who does so. He calls Israel a "cancer" and says, "It will be cut."

8. WINTER STORM

(AP) - A powerful winter storm already has dumped about a foot of snow in some areas of Colorado, and forecasters say Denver could get nearly two feet before it's over. The National Weather Service says Boulder and some areas north of Colorado Springs are struggling with 10 inches of snow.
