A lot of great artists and musicians collaborate with one another. That's happening this weekend in Toledo with a unique concert and live art event. It may never have been done before Friday night: a renowned painter creating a portrait live on stage in the time it takes the Toledo symphony to play a concert. Toledo Museum of Art Director Brian Kennedy came up with the idea. He says, "So I had this idea of making a portrait, you know, sort of a, ‘Pictures at an Exhibition,' would involve making a portrait. And there was only one person I knew who could potentially make a portrait live on stage in two hours of a concert." That was Spanish painter Felix de la Concha. He says, "It was crazy, of course, the idea because there were many aspects to think about. How, for instance, not to interfere with the musicians with the noise." The solution? Padding beneath his brushes and paints.
Each of his brushstrokes will be visible on stage and projected onto two big screens. Kennedy says, "These enormous screens make every little mark that he makes visible in a tangible way. I don't think anybody has ever seen a painting be made from start to finish like this. You put them together and I think that you've got a moment of synergy or certainly the potential to see two art forms come together sensorially at once. I've seen the rehearsals and it's great!"
But whose portrait will de la Concha be painting? The conductor? A musician? An audience member? He says, "Every night there will be a different composition, so I have to decide right on the way and improvise." Asked whether he was nervous about the challenge, he chuckles then says, "Ahhh, I'm excited! I think it's going to be very pleasant. I have the image of Leonardo da Vinci who used to paint with a small orchestra. He says that's the pleasure of painting that you can be enjoying some music while you are working. And so I can feel a little to have this privilege right now!"
Tickets are still available for Friday, February 3rd and Saturday, February 4th through the Symphony box office. The box office at the Peristyle opens one hour before showtime. You can also call 419-246-8000 or visit www.toledosymphony.com. The artists and directors will take the stage at 7pm both nights to discuss the work. The concert begins at 8pm.
