MORNING NEWS DIGEST – February 7, 2012

1. WEST TOLEDO APARTMENT FIRE

Crews were called to the apartments on the 4800 block of Lerado near the Hobby Lobby on Monroe Street. Firefighters say someone living inside the building called just before 11 last night after they smelled smoke.  Crews evacuated the four apartments inside.

2. TOLEDO VACANT HOUSE FIRE

Investigators are looking into what sparked a blaze at a vacant house on the 300 block of East Hudson near Manhattan and Lagrange this morning.

3. TOLEDO ROAD PROPOSALS

Today the Toledo City Council will consider Mayor Mike Bell's road project fund. According to city council's website, the proposal is to move more than $12 million dollars into the fund that pays for road resurfacing and general maintenance.

4. BAR SHOOTING SUSPECTS IN COURT

Two suspects are scheduled to face a judge today after police say they shot multiple people outside mug-shots bar and grill yesterday morning. Police arrested Rhaymoun and Richard Villolovous at a local hospital after police say they went to check on a friend who was shot outside the bar. The Toledo Blade reports city leaders are exploring the possibility of shutting the bar down.

5. NEW CASINO RULES FOR EMPLOYEES (COLUMBUS DISPATCH)

If you plan on working at the new Hollywood Casino -- concerts, golf and any other events on casino property -- are now off limits. According to the Columbus Dispatch -- the state ethics commission says unless your job position requires you to be at a concert -- or any other casino-run function -- you may not attend.

6. OH: STATE OF THE STATE

Ohio Governor John Kasich is set to lay out his plan for the future of the buckeye state. Kasich will deliver his State of the State address at a Steubenville elementary school this afternoon. State lawmakers have been barred from using Ohio tax dollars to cover travel expenses to hear the governor's speech.

7. OH: GINGRICH VISITS THREE CITIES

Ohio's primary is still about a month away, but Newt Gingrich is already campaigning in the buckeye state. Gingrich will hit three Ohio cities today - Dayton this afternoon - Cincinnati later on - and then a speech in Columbus tonight. Tomorrow, the former Speaker of the House will be in Cleveland.

8. OH: UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON STUDIES THE McRIB

Researchers down at the University of Dayton say McDonald's really ribs its competition. The study looked at McDonald's competitors and found whenever a fast food chain released a *pork-based* product, McDonalds brought out the "McRib sandwich". And the research showed whenever they did, the "McRib" always muscled out the competition. The researchers said they contacted McDonald's, who denied the product's launches were aimed at beating back competition.

9. BUSH SUPPORTS AUTO BAILOUT

Former President George W. Bush says if he had to do it again, he'd bail out the auto industry. The bridge loans to the auto industry were one of his administration's last acts. They gave out $25 billion to GM and Chrysler, as well as aid for their finance companies. The Obama administration offered up another $60 billion in early 2009. President Bush made the comments yesterday during the National Automobile Dealers Association Convention in Las Vegas.

10. WAL*MART ADDS GROCERY HEALTHY LABELS

Wal*Mart is joining the fight against childhood obesity by making it easier for customers to figure out if their groceries are healthy. The store is doing that by adding a big green label that reads *great for you* on healthier food options.
