When you book your next reservation you want to eat somewhere a clean bill of health, right? This week, we have several restaurants with sterling reviews from the Lucas County Health Department.
First, the restaurants with violations. 13abc examined a two week period of health reports to compile this list. At the top, New Empire Chinese Restaurant at 6540 Centers Dr. in Holland. It racked up 12 violations during a standard inspection at the beginning of the year. Including raw chicken stored over cooked egg rolls, open containers of rice noodles and an open bag of beans in the storage room, and improper thawing of fish in a sink. The owner tells us health inspectors helped fix the violations right away. Their supervisor at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department agrees. He's in charge of 14 full-time inspectors and one of the biggest food protection programs in the state.
Next up, a pair of critical violators according to the health department. Happy's Pizza at 1472 Sylvania had three violations, including chicken sitting in warm standing water. The new owner tells us he changed that right away and has made a lot of changes since he took over. He adds: health inspectors couldn't believe it was the same store and "actually patted him on the back."
A little farther down at 1515 Sylvania Ave. is White Tower. They had ten violations. Employee beverages on a shelf with no lids, food in a freezer not dated, and a repeat violation: scoops in water with no flow. The owner says "we always take everything into consideration, even these little things." That's why, he explains, White Tower worked with health inspectors to correct the violations.
Now, the repeat violators, as labeled by inspectors:
Tim Hortons at 4735 Monroe St. had pest traps soaked in syrup below a pop machine.
Red Wells at 301 River Rd in Maumee had employee hair restraints hanging from clean dish storage racks.
Little Caesar's at 6363 Monroe St in Sylvania had rusty food shelves, torn cooler door gaskets, damaged caulk and a hole in the drywall. The store manager tells us her boss "is definitely working on it and making plans to make this place better."
The restaurants with clean inspections and no violations:
Auntie Ann's/Hagen Daz at 3100 Main St in Maumee was violation free to start the New Year.
Comboz at 3243 Sylvania passed the test to start 2012 squeeky clean.
Rudy's Hot Dog at 4748 Monroe Street had no violations. The owner's daughter credits loyal employees who know the drill; plus, a lot of elbow grease.
