TOLEDO, Ohio -
He's got just one
primary win under his belt, but presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich says he's
still in it to win it, and Ohio is key.
In an
exclusive interview with 13abc Action News Wednesday morning, the former
Speaker of the House says Ohio
is pivotal in his race for the White House.
"Ohio is very, very important, both in the
primary and in the general election," Gingrich says. "We want to do everything
we can to win Ohio.
We think that it's winnable. Last public poll showed me slightly ahead here,
and we're going to do everything we can to win Ohio."
Gingrich is coming off last
place finishes in Colorado, Minnesota
and Missouri.
Rick Santorum won all three.
"Rick Santorum had
a good day," Gingrich says. "I'm delighted for him. Governor Romney had a bad
day, and, frankly, for the rest of us that means this is a wide open
race."
In Toledo,
where hopes are high for an economic turnaround, the speaker says deals like the
Marina District
and trips to China
are needed.
"I think that people
should look for investment from all around the world," he says. "You look for
places, for example, that have a Honda plant, have a Mercedes plant, a BMW
plant. Those are good jobs, they make good products, they put Americans to work…We
ought to make it easier for Americans to create new jobs as well as for
foreigners to invest in the United
States."
The speaker says he's
ready to make a promise to ease our pain at the pump.
"I think a Gingrich
administration would open up American energy," he says. "I helped launch ‘Drill
Here, Drill Now, Pay Less.' I still believe in it. I think if we were able to
develop American energy, if we were producing enough oil and enough gas, we
would drive down the price of gasoline, and we would be able to say to the Middle East that they cannot blackmail us. I think it is
very important for us to have energy independence to be able to do that."
Gingrich says he plans
to be in Toledo
in the next few weeks.
