EVENING NEWS DIGEST - FEBRUARY 10, 2012

NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. CHILD RAPIST SENTENCED

A Toledo man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for a heinous crime. Fredrick Coffey faced a judge this afternoon and was sentenced to life in prison for raping a 12 year old girl. The 56-year old man will possibly be eligible for parole after 30 years.

2. TOLEDO SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS

The Toledo Police Department wants 150 surveillance cameras to help fight crime. City council could vote this month to put up a city wide video surveillance system called "Skycop" that would, among other things, scan license plate numbers and detect gun shots. The system would cost the city $1.7 million.

3. ELECTRICITY COSTS

The Ohio Utility Regulators say the decision by First Energy to close six coal burning power plants including one in Oregon could eventually mean higher electricity rates. The Public Utilities says that's because there will be fewer plants to meet the demand.

4. OHIO REST STOPS

Should Ohio be able to lease freeway rest areas? That question will be addressed as part of a study on whether to privatize the Ohio Turnpike. The Ohio Department of Transportation is asking for more than $2 million for a firm to look at the financial options of privatizing both the toll road and interstate rest areas.

5. PLANNED PARENTHOOD MERGER

Three Ohio affiliates of Planned Parenthood plan to merge this summer. The Plain Dealer reports the merger of Northeast Ohio and Central Ohio affiliates will be known as The Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and will serve 68 of the state's 88 counties.

6. WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER

OSU's new medical center will be named the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University. It's named after Limited founder and long time OSU supporter Les Wexner. Today's announcement came almost exactly a year after Wexner donated $100 million to the medical center, one of the largest such gifts ever to a public university.

NEW NATIONAL NEWS

7. OBAMA CONTRACEPTION & RELIGION

The president has backed away from a new requirement that religious employers provide free birth control coverage for workers. Instead, employees will be able to get free contraception directly from insurance companies.

8. KID ROCK

Kid Rock is (expletive deleted) mad over a column in the Detroit Free Press. Columnist Susan Tompor wrote Monday that some of Kid Rock's "Made in Detroit" tee shirts aren't made in Detroit or the US. Kid Rock's expletive-laced letter on the "Made in Detroit" website says the column misses the company's goals of re-instilling a "sense of Detroit pride." The letter also says the company "NEVER laid claim" to items "actually being made in Detroit.
