EVENING NEWS DIGEST - FEBRUARY 13, 2012

NEW LOCAL NEWS

1. MICHIGAN MILITIA

Opening arguments began today in the trial of the Michigan militia. A prosecutor says members of the group called Hutaree were ready to "go to war" against the government. But the lawyer for the group says there was no planned attack. Seven members of the group are on trial. They were arrested nearly two years ago.

2. CLYDE CANCER CLUSTER

The US Environmental Protection Agency is on the scene in Sandusky County, investigating whether there is a cancer cluster in Clyde. Since 1996, more than three dozen kids have been diagnosed with cancer in the area and four have died.

3. ROMNEY MICHIGAN

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney may be in trouble in Michigan. Two polls show Romney trailing a surging Rick Santorum. The American Research Group says Santorum is favored by 33% of likely voters. Romney, who's father was governor of Michigan, came in second with 27%. The Michigan primary is two weeks from tomorrow, February 28th.

4. OHIO STATE FAIR

The Ohio State Fair isn't until August, but fair organizers have announced the first signed act. Nickelodeon teen star Victoria Justice will perform August 4th and tickets to the show will include fair admission. The fair will announce the other acts for the 12day Columbus event later this year.

5. WHITNEY HOUSTON

Los Angeles authorities say Whitney Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was found in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub and had prescription drugs on hand. Officials say there are no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma. Some of her friends say the family is planning a funeral in New Jersey by the end of the week.

6. CHILDHOOD CANCER DRUG

A US Senator and three doctor groups are urging a drug maker to step up production of a crucial cancer drug that's suddenly in short supply. Doctors and hospitals around the country are panicking because of a low supply of methotrexate. It's used to treat a common and viral childhood cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It has a 90% cure rate when properly treated.
