Homes needed for Port Clinton beagles

Posted: Updated:
PORT CLINTON, Ohio -

More than a dozen dogs have been seized after they were found living in their own filth in a foreclosed home. Now they're being cared for at the Humane Society of Ottawa County.

The Humane officer on the case says the dogs are relatively healthy, considering the conditions they were living in, and they seem to have quickly adjusted to their new found freedom.

But taking care of the dogs until the case goes to court is a costly venture for the small Port Clinton shelter.

Thirteen beagles were seized from an empty house in Port Clinton. Investigators say the dogs were being fed, but that's about it.

"When we walked in there was feces and urine from one end of the house to the other," says Humane Officer Denny Hammond. "Their dog bowls were sitting on top of the feces."

The dogs have gone through health screenings, and Hammond says they seem to be enjoying their new surroundings.

"They're full of energy now," he says. "They are friendly. They'll come up and kiss you. I imagine they're happy to be out in the fresh air all the time in a clean area."

So far, a few of the dogs have gone to foster homes, but a lot more help is needed.

It's not just foster homes that are needed. Taking care of the dogs is an added expense for a small shelter that relies entirely on donations.

Still, the Humane Society of Ottawa County says all the animals they rescue are worth the extra work and expenses.

"It makes everything we do worthwhile," Hammond says. "I've been through a number of rescues like this, and it gives you a good feeling saving a creature from what could have been a horrible fate."

The dogs' owners are scheduled to be in court next week. They face 13 counts of animal cruelty, with a maximum fine of $750 and up to 90 days in jail on each count.

If you'd like to foster one of the dogs or donate supplies, money or time, visit the Humane Society of Ottawa County's website.

If you're not in the market for a beagle, dozens of other dogs and cats are up for adoption at the shelter.
