TOLEDO - Sophomore guard Rian Pearsonhas been named the Mid-American Conference's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today. Pearson is receiving the award for the second time in three weeks after averaging 15.5 ppg as well as a team-high 13.0 rpg and 3.0 apg in the Rockets' two games vs. Ohio and Bowling Green.
A individualized studies major with a 3.208 grade-point average, Pearson tallied his seventh double-double of the season (which ranks second in the MAC) with 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Rockets to a come-from-behind 77-73 victory over the Bobcats. UT trailed 15-0 in the opening minutes before Pearson helped the Rockets take a 38-34 halftime lead with 10 points and nine boards in the first half.
The Raytown, MO native then tallied 13 points and a team-best nine boards to nearly help Toledo to a win over their arch-rival Falcons. Pearson led the Rockets in assists in both games with three helpers in each contest. The Raytown, MO native is the only player in the MAC to appear in the Top 10 of the conference rankings in scoring (17.2 ppg), third in rebounds (8.4 rpg) and sixth in steals (1.7 spg) and ranks fourth nationally in rebounding among guards.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
