An accident in Toledo has resulted in the death of one person. Seven others were injured in the crash near Cherry and Summit Thursday afternoon. Police tell us it appears the 69-year-old man who died was attempting to get to the hospital for a medical issue when the crash happened. Police say it was a chain reaction crash that not only injured multiple people but also shut down the intersection for hours.
A total of five cars were involved. Witnesses say a man driving a white minivan appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed when he ran into the back of another van, starting the chain reaction crash. Seven people suffered minor injuries. But fire fighters say the man in the white minivan had critical injuries, and later died as a result of those injuries. That driver was actually trapped in his car.
Witnesses and those involved say they're still shaken up. One witness, Steven Morgan, says, "I saw the guy was driving, but I guess he was about to pass out. I was on the side of him when he got to the bridge. He must of blanked out cause his foot hit the accelerator. He tried to stop, but he couldn't."
Police say the driver of the minivan that died was likely having a health issue and attempting to get to the hospital. They are now waiting for results of an autopsy and continue to investigate the accident.
