Nine years ago, Genoa High
School's cheerleading coach lost her battle with
cancer. On Saturday, dozens of area squads raised money to help find a cure for
the disease.
More than 50 cheer
squads and dance teams spent the day competing at Genoa High School
for the 8th annual Cheer for a Cure.
The fundraiser honors
former Genoa
cheerleading coach Stella Bertz, who lost her battle with cancer nine years
ago.
"Stella was amazing," says Genoa senior Bethany Skees. "She didn't coach
me, but you always wanted her to be your coach. It was really sad when she
passed, and it was terrible for the community."
Now every year, Bertz's
daughter brings together girls from across northwest Ohio for some friendly competition, all with
the goal of finding a cure for cancer.
It's a cause that hits
close to home for senior Alysa Malcom, whose mother was recently diagnosed with
the disease.
"You can't imagine it's going to happen to
you," she says. "But my mother is amazing and so strong. I really look up to
her."
From stunts to cheers,
family says combining Bertz's passion for cheerleading with a push for cancer
research is the best way to keep her spirit alive.
Cheer For a Cure raised
more than $20,000 Saturday. All the money will help fund oncology research at Ohio State
University.
