Lady Falcons Jessica Slagle Named MAC Player of the Week

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Jessica Slagle has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Feb. 20) afternoon.  Slagle, a senior, earns the honor for the second time in her collegiate career, and the second time in the last four weeks.

Slagle's award marks the sixth MAC P-O-W honor for the Falcons this season to date.  Redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers has earned conference accolades three times (Dec. 12, Jan. 16 and Jan. 23), while junior Chrissy Steffen captured the award on Jan. 2.  Slagle's first P-O-W award came on Jan. 30.

Slagle, a native of Sidney, Ohio (Lehman Catholic H.S.), led the Falcons in scoring in both games last week, as BGSU went 2-0 and clinched at least a tie for the MAC East Division title. She averaged 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game on the week, leading BG in assists as well as scoring.

Slagle led all players with 19 points in Wednesday's (Feb. 15) 62-52 win over Buffalo at the Stroh Center.  She scored the last four points of the first half, then went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final minute of the game to clinch the win.  Slagle was 9-of-11 from the stripe against the Bulls, and also went 5-for-9 from the field and tied her career high with two blocked shots.

On Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18), Slagle paced BG and tied for game honors with 15 points in a 60-55 win at Akron.  She had a game-high four assists, and was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line, including hitting a pair of free throws in the final second to clinch that victory.  That win also clinched at least a tie for the MAC's East Division title for the Falcons.

On the season, Slagle is averaging 12.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, leading the Falcons in the latter category.  She has set career highs in nearly every statistical category this season.  In MAC games, Slagle is second on the team with 14.2 ppg, and she also has 4.5 rpg and a team-leading 2.8 assists, along with 1.8 steals per outing.

Slagle earns this week's MAC Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division.  Tavelyn James of Eastern Michigan was named the MAC P-O-W in the West.

Slagle and the Falcons, 22-4 overall and 12-1 in the MAC, hit the road for a Wednesday (Feb. 22) game against Ohio.  Then, the Brown and Orange will return to the Stroh for a Saturday (Feb. 25) game vs. Miami, beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Saturday's contest will be 'Senior Day' for the program, with Slagle and fellow fourth-year Falcon Maribeth Giese recognized in pregame ceremonies.
