Sandusky County Deputies Franklin Kaiser and Charles Pump were fired and a third, Josh Smith, resigned Tuesday after a disciplinary hearing found they violated multiple jail policies regarding the treatment of a female inmate.
This stems from an incident on January 10th at the Sandusky County jail. Investigative documents state, the three men were on duty, when an inmate started acting out. The 21-year-old apparently flooded her cell, by trying to flush her paper gown down the toilet. She was then left naked for six hours.
During that time, the officers are accused of several acts of misconduct, including sexually exploiting the woman while she performed sex acts on herself. In fact, reports state that Pump found her behavior humorous and laughingly engaged her in sexually charged conversation over the intercom.
Documents also state that Kaiser acknowledges the inmate tried to engage him in sexual conversation, but claims he deflected all of her comments.
"I was very angered over it," Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer said. "To have deputies who you always trust and feel they will follow policies and procedures to do anything like that."
Sheriff Overmyer said he will not tolerate this type of behavior, and is now working to make sure something like that never happens again.
"I'm going to have to sit down with staff and administration, we're going to have to put our heads together and look at new ideas," the Sheriff said. "I feel responsible for things like that, and I'm not going to let them go on."
Overmyer said the former deputies are not facing criminal charges at this time. As for the inmate, she's since been released from jail. She was originally arrested for telephone harassment.
