Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season for millions of Christians around the world and a day when many people attend church services. It's a day when Christians get ashes on their forehead as a sign of mourning and repentance.
Father Bill Rose of Christ the King Church in Toledo says, "We come here today because each of us belongs to God and we each know at times we are sinners."
He adds that Ash Wednesday is the start of a time of reflection and repentance for sins. "Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 40 days of Lent," he says. "And it's the process of spiritual journey of going through giving prayer, alms and fasting."
Wearing the sign of the cross made with ashes on your forehead shows you are a Christian-- something even the youngest parishioners know when their friends ask them.
Fourth grader Vinny Boraggina says, "I tell them it's a sign of Christ."
And even though Ash Wednesday falls on a work day in the middle of busy, daily schedules-- Father Rose says parishioners of all ages make time for the yearly service.
Father Rose says, "People do come back for Ash Wednesday. There's something significant about remembering that we are all sinners and that we belong to God."
Ash Wednesday falls on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as February 4th or as late as March 10th.
