In a speech Thursday at a United Auto Workers hall in Toledo, Ohio, Biden is expected to offer a vigorous defense of the president's auto industry bailout.

The republican presidential race could last for months.

But the president's re-election campaign isn't waiting around for its eventual opponent.

Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden made his 2012 campaign debut speaking to enthusiastic supporters at UAW Local 12 in Toledo.

Biden defended President Obama's auto industry bailout, comparing how the republican presidential hopefuls say they would have handled the crisis with what the president did.

"The guy I work with every day, the president, he didn't flinch. This is a man with steel in his spine. He knew that resurrecting the industry wasn't going to be popular It was absolutely clear in every bit of polling data. And he knew he was taking a chance. But he believed, he wasn't going to give up on a million jobs and the iconic industry America invented."

Mr. Biden's trip to northwest Ohio marks the first of four campaign events in the next coming weeks as the Obama campaign ramps up the vice president's role in the re-election bid.

Shortly after the energized crowd filed out, Vice President Biden took a few minutes to talk with Lee Conklin.
