Record warmth in march and now frost in April is wreaking havoc with fruit crops in our region.
Orchard owners have been working long hours to try to fend off damage. Macqueen Orchards has suffered some frost damage but it's still too early to know how much.

What a contrast from last spring:  Remember how cold and wet that was?  This year, the blossoms came a whole month early. While we enjoyed that 80 degree weather in March, Jeff MacQueen was cringing.  MacQueen says, "When it gets 85 degrees for 3 days they break dormancy and they're waking up.  So once they start growing they will not stop growing."

That's fine if you don't have another frost.  But we did.  Then another.  Then another last night. MacQueen says one frost won't get you, but a second and third keep damaging more blossoms and eventually can lead to a less than full apple or peach crop.  He says, The first frost we had six blossoms. There were 2 or 3 that the frost killed. So we still had 2 or 3 left.  The second one, our odds are diminishing."

Last year at this time, the trees were still bare and dormant.  This April they're full of blossoms and we still have a whole month to go until our average last frost date in Northwest Ohio. MacQueen says, "I've got records from the last 40 years and May 10th we had a 25 degree night.  So you just don't know."  He and his crew have been fighting back the frost with a giant wind machine. They crank it up each cold night over the peaches trees. The oscillating fan mixes the air enough to boost the temperature a few degrees.  That can make all the difference and has MacQueen holding out hope for a good season.  He says, "I think we're gonna be at least 50 or 60 percent of the crop.  I'm really optimistic right now."

Orchards across Ohio, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania are all dealing with the same problem.  They'll have to wait a bit to see how their crops turn out this season.  if there is a lot damage, supply could be low and prices could rise.
