Fatal crash investigated as possible road rage

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, Mich. -

A crash that took the life of a 69-year-old Belleville man may have been a result of road rage, according to the Monroe Evening News. Monroe County Deputies, however, will only say alcohol was not a factor and that the crash remains under investigation.

The crash happened on Southbound I-75 near Exit 18, Nadeau Rd. around 10:35 p.m. Tuesday. According to the Monroe Co.Sheriff's Office, John Mercurio Jr., 48, was driving a red 2007 Dodge Ram, towing a classic car on a trailer. His mother and father were passengers.

A silver 2010 Dodge Ram, driven by John Zabawa, 56, of Luna Pier, collided with the other pick-up truck. Both vehicles struck the median guardrail, where the trailer disconnected. The two vehicles continued to travel south, when John Mercurio Sr., 69, the rear-seat passenger, was ejected and struck by the truck driven by Zabawa.

Authorities pronounced John Mercurio Sr. dead at the scene. His wife, front seat passenger Laurie Mercurio, 66, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe. Both drivers were unharmed.

The Monroe Evening News reports witnesses told investigators the two drivers did not know each other, but there was some type of issue between the two vehicles that began on southbound I-275. Deputies have not yet issued any citations.
