Obama in Ohio pushing job training programs

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

President Obama made a stop in the Buckeye State Wednesday, speaking up for job training programs at Lorain County Community College. He also pushed his re-election message of tax fairness, saying Republicans want to give wealthy Americans tax cuts they don't need.

The president isn't the only one pushing for more training. Some of Ohio's lawmakers in Washington say they want the exact same thing, but they want more than just that.

Where are the jobs in northwest Ohio?

Senator Sherrod Brown points to solar technology and wind turban technology.

"Some 70,000 jobs in Ohio are unfilled because companies can't find the right qualifications in workers," he says.

Brown says it's something community colleges and career centers need to work on.

"At Owens and Terra Tech and other community colleges, we're seeing they are more and more connecting workers with local businesses to train people to go to work, and we know there are an increasing number of jobs in northwest Ohio," he says.

But some members of congress point out the need to protect jobs that are already in place.

Congressman Bob Latta represents nearly 60,000 workers in manufacturing jobs, as well as farmers and independent business owners.

"I hear the same things, especially when I am going through plants and farms," he says. "Number one, it is about regulations, over-burdensome regulations, especially coming from this administration."

Latta is talking about healthcare and energy costs, high corporate income taxes, and a confusing tax code. They're all issues that employers in northwest Ohio say are preventing them from hiring more workers.

"Gas prices are $3.85 at home. We have got to get those things down," he says. "It is going to affect farmers and food prices. Those are the things that I would like to see the president talk about."

Latta and Brown both say that one of their main priorities is to bring jobs to Ohio.
