The Hens are ready to start their next homestand Saturday evening against the Columbus Clippers. First pitch is slated for 6:00 pm. As of Friday morning, the Hens are riding a five game winning streak-- all on the road. Last week, Manager Phil Nevin told me how important, from a bonding and chemistry standpoint, this first road trip was going to be. Those results seem to show that things are "gelling" quite well together thus far. I'll take it!!
Here are just a few of my thoughts about the team's first road trip. I have always been told that "life is 90% mental, 10% everything else." I will tell you sports revolves around this thought, ALL the time. One thing I know for sure is that simply being "on the road" is tough enough before the game is even played (home crowd advantage for your opponent, the fatigue of travel, a break in your normal routine, etc.).
And it is tough. The Mud Hens dropped their first road game 3-2, then had their next game postponed. A doubleheader the next day didn't start well as they fell 9-2. The deeper the hole, the harder it is to get back on the winning track. But they bounced back in game two of that double header, getting a thrilling extra-inning win which launched their current streak. I think it is safe to say there are some determined, mentally tough ball players on this Mud Hens roster. A lot to be excited about for this LONG upcoming season of some Triple A baseball action down at Fifth Third Field.
It doesn't stop there though with all the action. Remember, all season long there are plenty of events and festivities going on you won't want to miss. I know for all you Star Wars fans, "May the Fourth Be With You" night (May 4th) is almost here. If you are interested in teaching your kiddos what it takes to be a "pro" baseball player, camps are right around the corner. Check it out!
There's a lot to check out at Fifth Third Field... and don't forget the food. I know by experience, the food is to die for; boy is it GO HENS!!!
