What’s Going Around: allergies, asthma and atopic dermatitis

Posted: Updated:

Watery, itchy eyes, cough.. wheezing.. and more.  Plenty of issues are getting kids in to see the doctor this week.  Susan Ross wells has a look at What's Going Around?

A Toledo pediatrician says he's seeing the three A's right now... and they're all conditions that can come at the same time.

The three A's are: allergies, asthma and atopic dermatitis, or eczema.

Pediatrician Dr. R.W. Mills says they go together with one another, and he'll frequently see all three together.

"Those are three that we sometimes see, especially in the spring when the trees are blossoming and the grasses... and the kids: we'll have their allergies flare up."

Dr. Mills says when you look at the three A's... It all begins with the allergies.

"Those then flare up asthma, so a lot of the kids that all of a sudden start with the runny nose and the red eyes, and sneezing, next thing you know they're coughing, next thing you know they're wheezing, so I've seen several kids this morning that have the cough and wheeze combination. That started because their allergies had flared up."

And the third A: atopic dermatitis or eczema.  Dr. Mills says watch for dry, red patches on your child's skin that are very itchy. He says they tend to show up at the creases on the body.

"Right at the flex portion in front of the elbow," says Dr. Mills. "Behind the elbow, behind the ears, behind the knees. The kids will get it on their hands a lot, so very dry, very itchy, drives kids crazy."

Dr. Mills says you need to be careful that the children don't scratch so much that they cause a secondary infection. He says there are topical creams for the eczema and these areas should be kept clean to prevent that secondary infection.
