TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) -- Last week, we showed you the restaurant with the most violations so far this year. This week, there's not only a tie, there's a new record.
Bambino's pizza at 1515 Eleanor Ave. in Toledo, during its last standard inspection, had 17 violations -- the most of any restaurant in 2012. 13 of those violations were critical.
No sanitizer available at the time of inspection; Food stored in coolers with no lids; An open cup of coffee on the cutting table.
We tried to contact Bambino's, but no one answered the phone and it did not go to voice mail.
While bambinos set a new record, this next place tied the old one. Madison Bistro at 518 Madison Ave. downtown Toledo had 16 violations …. Including 9 critical.
The health inspector noted the food handler did not wash her hands the entire time the inspection took place; Three large garbage bags full of cabbage were being used as storage containers; There was evidence of pests, including snap traps and a pest control invoice stating the company had been treated for roaches and mice.
The manager at Madison Bistro tells 13 abc those traps were in "a closet across from the women's room." She went on to say,"(construction crews) did a lot of work in this alley, and they stirred every critter in the world up ... But our pest control company has kept it under control."
In addition, she said, "Since (inspectors) have been here, everything has been corrected except our screen door, and that's on order ... Our food here is very good ... We do the best we can with the few people we have in this economy."
Some restaurants not only make the grade, they ace the test. Caper's Pizza Bar on 2038 S. Byrne was violation free.
El Salto Authentic Mexican Restaurant at 219 Golden Gate Shopping Plaza also had zero violations. You might say El Salto is muy bueno.
Here are some other restaurants with no violations: Ayana's Coney Island and Pizzeria on West Sylvania ... Boston Market on Alexis ... and Cracker Barrel in Maumee. Plus, Long John Silver's in Oregon ... and Cindee Shivers on Airport Highway in Toledo.
