Springfield assistant softball coach arrested

Posted: Updated:

An assistant softball coach at Springfield Local Schools was arrested over the weekend.  Toledo police say Christine Zappone, 22, was taken into custody early Sunday morning, after a student was found heavily intoxicated in the backseat of her car.  Officers also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Zappone was an assistant softball coach at Springfield High School.  The 16-year-old in the car, was a player on the team and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.  According the district superintendent, Zappone's contract was suspended on Monday.

Parents in the school district say they're shocked to learn of the arrest.

"They should terminate anyone's contract that does something like that," Kurt Carpenter, who's son attends Springfield High School said. "You're trusting in a school system and at that point you can't trust them anymore.  That's a kid and it's wrong."

"I just pray that she was there to help the kids and that there aren't people out there like that, I mean it's pretty scary," Pam Cook, who has a grand daughter at the high school said.

Zappone has been released from jail but is now being charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of drug paraphernalia, and drug abuse.
