Don't be fooled by our summer-like weather... some cool weather illnesses are still out there. Susan Ross Wells talked to ProMedica family physician Dr. Todd Francis this week who says he's still seeing viruses make the rounds here and there. He says this time of year it is sometimes tough to tell whether it's a cold or allergies.
"Mostly nasal congestion, congestion, sore throat, particularly at night into the morning, some achiness, low-grade fever and in some people that's progressing into bronchitis or triggering their asthma and that kind of thing... kind of a nuisance."
Dr. Francis says hands down allergies are the big thing right now. He says spring brings tree pollen allergies, and now grass pollen is bothering people, too.
He says taking antihistamines on days you know you'll be exposed is a good idea.
He's also seeing some injuries: strains and sprains as people work in their yards, and get out for bike rides and other outdoor activities. That can lead to, not only injuries, but sunburns. Dr. Francis says you can't forget the sunscreen for you and the kids. He says use one with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours. It's a message doctors push over and over.
"We like the sun. we like to get a tan," says Dr. Francis. "We also don't like to spend the time to put sunscreen on. It's a nuisance, but so are sunburns and so is... the skin cancer down the line is a bigger nuisance."
