Maumee considering opt out of TARTA services

MAUMEE, Ohio -

Just months after Perrysburg residents voted to stop TARTA services, Maumee is considering opting out too. Maumee City Council met with TARTA leaders this week to get the conversation started on if they will continue to use TARTA services.

They plan on trying to figure out if keeping the service is economical and just how many residents are using the TARTA services on a regular basis.

"The state has given us a window of opportunity from a an essence of January 1st 2012 to the November election of 2013, we just felt from a city council stand point that we owe it to the community to at least explore the situation," says Councilman Brent Buehrer.

Currently, Maumee residents pay $1 million property tax for the service. Opting out will help cut costs.

"I think that them discussing it now, they're exercising their right to do so. Basically it is part of Ohio law now that they can opt out," says Steve Atkinson, Marketing Director for TARTA.

Back in March, Perrysburg voters decided to opt out of TARTA after some members of council said they felt the service was underused and too costly. In Perrysburg they are still trying to figure out a different form of public transit.
