It's the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in our country, and the second leading cause of cancer death. Colorectal cancer is a cancer that doctors say no one has to have. That's because its one of the few preventable cancers. All you have to do is get screened starting at age fifty, if you're considered at normal risk.
Screening is considered so important because colon cancer begins with small polyps that can grow in the colon. Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard when it comes to screening.
"It's one of the only tests that not only screens for it, but prevents it, because if they see a polyp they can take out that polyp before it has a chance to turn into cancer," says Deb Ross, who's a nurse and the Education Coordinator for Mercy Cancer Center.
She's also a member of the Lucas County Colorectal Cancer Coalition. The group was established to help raise awareness and encourage screening in Lucas County. Statistics show we have one of the highest late stage diagnosis rates in the state for colorectal cancer.
The coalition has held awareness events before, but Saturday, June 2nd is the first annual "Get Your Rear in Gear" race at the Shops at Fallen Timbers.
"Just a lot of entertainment, things going on out there and awareness. It truly is an awareness, education and a fun event all kind of rolled into one, says Ross."
13abc's Lee Conklin will be there to help kick off the race. He knows the importance of screening, after losing his mother to colon cancer.
"My mother did not have a colonoscopy until it was too late. She was into her sixties when she was diagnosed. She died at sixty six."
Help get the word out about the importance of screening at tomorrow's "get Your Rear in Gear" 5k at the Shops at Fallen Timbers. Hundreds of people have already pre-registered, but you can also register Saturday morning starting at 8. There's a race for the runners, or you can also enjoy a leisurely walk. The money will help pay for local education and awareness efforts.
